Pingali Venkayya was a distinguished freedom fighter, educationist, and the visionary who designed the Indian national flag. Born on August 2, 1876, in Andhra Pradesh, Venkayya had a deep interest in geology, languages, and patriotism. His relentless efforts to create a unifying symbol for India culminated in the design of the Tricolor (Tiranga), which was later adopted as the official flag of independent India in 1947. Beyond his role as a flag designer, he actively participated in the freedom struggle and worked closely with leaders like Mahatma Gandhi. His legacy is a proud reminder of the spirit of unity and nationalism that shaped modern India. Remembering him is especially important for students of history and UPSC aspirants.
